As in the previous year, indications had been delivered earlier for the second day of the global edition of Pokémon Go Fest. Last year, that involved quite a bit - or actually a lot - of battling in the form of raids. Today, there is or was surely a bit of that over the entire day, though the entire experience was fully different in comparison to what happened last year.
Those indications, which I referred to as having the "ultra" quality, are not linked to Ultra Unlocks that will come when they come, but to Ultra Beasts. That's right: these otherworldly Pokémon from different dimensions are now present in Pokémon Go - and with them is how they appear. Being equivalent in spirit to Legendary or Mythical Pokémon, they appear just like them in Level 5 raids. One big difference is that instead of showing up in an early form as a raid boss "egg", it shows up as an Ultra Wormhole instead, and when the raid begins, the Ultra Beast appears, and things proceed like a normal raid afterwards.
Currently, only one of these beasts have appeared, and that would be the first one that Trainers are confronted with in the main series games, Nihilego (its "other" name being UB-01 Symbiont, which becomes clear in this case). The raids followed an appearance pattern - also still within 10 AM to 6 PM - of 10 minutes in pre-raid stage and 30 minutes in raid stage, which also applied yesterday, though with the Level 5 raid bosses of Kyogre and Groudon. Level 1 and 3 raid bosses, as with yesterday, remain available as an easier target for fewer people and smaller groups as well as those who are bored, with the 9 free passes available for on-site and 3 remote passes available as a separate, free bundle, along with other paid bundles also available since yesterday in the in-game Shop.
On the side of Research, there was a unique twist. Instead of Professor Willow, a character named Rhi from the Ultra Beast Recon Squad guided Trainers through two sets of Special Research. One of these was gotten for everyone, including those who did not pay for the event ticket, while the other was gotten by completing the former and only for those who paid. This is only the second instance that Special Research is not guided by the Professor (Jessie and James guided the Secrets of the Jungle one from some time ago). Regardless, the presented story is gripping with the disappearance of Professor Willow, likely in connection with one of the appearing Ultra Wormholes.
Like yesterday, I spent the entire day walking in the same place to catch Pokémon for other possible Shiny opportunities, to contribute to Global Challenges involving raids, and to complete both Special Research sets. Close to the end of the day, I managed to get to the last page of the second set with all free passes depleted - also as with yesterday - and I got a few more Shiny Pokémon, oddly enough being more than yesterday. It was still more or less an OK turnout with yesterday being included.
With the second day having concluded, this year's (global edition of) Pokémon Go Fest has been an entertaining one, moreover to kick off a season-long marathon of the return of its regional incarnations. It also sets an "ultra" state that the rest of the season is likely to follow in more ways than one. One would still have to be wise and utilize that "ultra" state for good experiences in-game as well as in the world's current state and beyond.
