Given the primary focus of this blog, I'm obviously attracted to Pokémon. Even so, in some cases, I've also indicated my attraction to other things besides Pokémon, which may have been aided by or were precursors to my Pokémon attraction. Something that may have influenced those attractions specifically is an attraction to "genuine" people - characters, even - through whom I appreciate my attractions in general even more. I thought I'd take a post to discuss this specific matter and how it's realized in Pokémon and elsewhere.
An easy example is the "Ursaring" thing I mentioned some weeks ago. Despite being imagined, the "Ursaring" is actually made out to be like a real person, someone who anyone can be very comfortable having around (and then miss once that someone needs to go for whatever reason). In this way, the person - or rather, the character who is played by the person - becomes someone who is "genuine", with true feelings and impressions that leave imprints on the people who get to know that particular someone.
Translating this to Pokémon proper, Ash would fit this definition of "genuineness" as both a person and a character. This might very well explain why I and many others are attracted to him, as well as the feeling of longing with him not primarily gracing the Pokémon anime anymore. The point is that there are certain realistic connections that are and have been made, specifically in perceiving that Ash indeed displays a sense of real personage: a true friend whose presence is not only as an image on screen (or even paper) but also as a soul.
Carrying this to other aspects of Pokémon, some fans - particularly of the more creature-loving ones - would probably consider Lugia as a "genuine" species character, even if it is something that doesn't represent an actual person (human). Regardless, the way that it understands and communicates with actual people or humans may be regarded as "genuine" for pretty much the same reasons as above, as something eagerly expected to come and missed when it goes away.
How people manage to make impressions on others and make them feel good is a wonderful thing, and that if nothing else would make them out to be "genuine" and real. That too is perfectly applicable for people whose presence are unreal, or even characters that don't even (remotely) resemble people or humans yet are very much like them and perceived as "real". In this way, seeking things - and then being attracted to them - that allow for this kind of linkage becomes a way of showing "genuineness" as well.
