Just a few days ago as this Pokémon Go season started, I mentioned that the season would have "a very important regular series of events" as with past years. That would, of course, be Pokémon Go Fest, the around-the-world celebration of the best that the game has to offer with regard to Pokémon. Since it's still early on in the season, I'd like to deal with it now, since last year I only did so at the late end, even if that turned out to be just as well. Furthermore, "running themes" can already be identified, although for the purpose of this post, they may have to remain slightly covered up as a preview.
Everything starts with the regional versions of the event. The festivities kick off (or rather, kicked off, as it actually took place last weekend) in Sendai for the Asia region, followed by Madrid for the Europe region in less than two weeks, then New York City for the Americas region in the first weekend of July. It's the usual tour around the world, except this time things really do get rolling somewhat early on in the season, in contrast to last year's late-season festivities, which seems to be a rather welcome change.
Then, there is the Global version of the event for everyone, which is due one week after the New York City edition and in effect marks the end for the around-the-world tour with something that goes all over the world in its own way. Like the past few years, it will be a two-day affair all its own, with all the usual features and some abstractions from the regional editions as above. It may not be an alternative to the regional editions, but at the least it can serve to complement them well.
As for those "running themes", when sunlight goes around the world, there is a "chase" between brightness and darkness, and that may be evident in some features of all the events above. Strange dimensional creatures are also involved, especially one which may change the meanings of day and night, and there is another creature from the dark shadows of the night. These will become quite evident soon - just not at the moment.
Something as regular as Pokémon Go Fest is always eagerly awaited for, especially after all the developments that make it what it is today, as a festivity that serves both certain regions and everyone. This year, with brightness and darkness in pursuit of each other, the dynamics of the worldly event seem to be highlighted strongly, yet still defined in the Pokémon terms that make it a vital part of this time of year, not to mention the game itself.
