'Cause every time I breathe, I take you in
And my heart beats again
Baby, I can't help it
You keep me drowning in your love
Every time I try to rise above
I'm swept away by love
Baby, I can't help it
You keep me drowning in your love
-- "Drowning", Backstreet Boys
Sometimes it's hard to believe that Pokémon is now present in many places and to a great extent. For Pokémon fans like me, that means many avenues of attraction - so much so that it could be said to "immerse" or "submerge" someone in them. Considering the implications of those two words, there is a song that comes to mind, and that would be this song by an ever-present boy band about such attractions (certainly, with those of Pokémon included) and how they affect the ones who are attracted.
Commonly, the song implicates romantic love; even the word "love" itself is present in the quoted chorus as above. And that is fine, because that can have strong sentiments all its own. Of course, strong sentiments can also occur for attractions beyond romantic love, and in the case of Pokémon, those strong sentiments are present for and within many fans, as might be suggested by certain and many Pokémon happenings. The end result for both might be just the same: becoming "submerged", thus "drowning" in them.
In a way, this song can be considered similar or having parallels to another song I discussed last month. Whereas that song has a gentle imagery, this one is more profound - and both are equally fine descriptors for romantic love and some fans' attraction to Pokémon. In fact, "You're the air that I breathe" is actually present in the lyrics in the bridge (not quoted here), further tying the two songs together. While it is certain both songs were independently composed, they do seem to have the same frame of mind for love or any other attraction.
A little-known fact is that the song, along with another one from the same musical group and that had been covered nearly six years ago, served as the ending theme for an anime series (obviously, not Pokémon), with the other song being the opening theme instead. Not much romantic love appears to go on in that anime, as is the case with Pokémon, but if anything, the sentiments raised in it should be fairly similar to the themes of both songs, which affirms the general applicability of the sentiments raised by the songs.
The extensive presence of Pokémon today could be considered to be indicative of how many people (fans) like and enjoy the franchise today, and how much of that liking and enjoyment is present in them. Evidently, that can go deep (and deeper) to the point that one becomes immersed in them, as in my case. Whether or not that's the case for other Pokémon fans, that may be up to them individually, but however deep love or attraction goes, some degree of immersion will always be there.
